Landscaping Like a Pro: The Right Equipment Rentals for Every Stage
Landscaping projects range from a small backyard makeover to an extensive formal garden overhaul. Whatever the size and end goal, you’re likely going to need to hire some earth moving and other equipment to get the job done.
Landscaping begins with a site survey, determining the art of the possible and creating a design based on the results. A project can range from the simple – perhaps you’re starting with a blank canvas of lawn – to the metamorphosis of an as-yet un-sculpted plot of land or even a concreted-over area.
The scale of the landscaping will be what drives the equipment required. Setting up a hire timetable is the perfect strategy for ensuring the right kit is on-site when required and that your landscaping task runs according to plan.
Very handily, many landscaping tools can be attached to a larger piece of equipment.
For example, you might need a skidsteer loader to transport materials around the site. However, one of the greatest assets for landscaping tasks of all sizes is an excavator. These come in varying sizes – from the smallest miniature versions to huge 14 T plus options.
Whatever the size, an excavator is a jack-of-all-trades that gives the option to fit different attachments – the perfect solution for so many landscaping tasks:
Buckets: For digging and trenching. There are many different types of buckets, each designed for particular use. These include those of different widths, heavy-duty buckets (for higher-density materials), V-buckets (for pipe laying), skeleton buckets (for sieving), grading buckets (for levelling) and trenching buckets.
Augers: A spiral-shaped attachment that makes light work of creating holes for posts, trees and shrubs. They come in various models, such as direct-drive and gear-driven – the latter often being the best choice for extremely heavy-duty applications.
Flail mower: When the shrubs and undergrowth need a tough cutting solution, then bring the flail mower into play. This tool will get the job done without the blade-blunting heartache a regular mower experiences when it hits a solid object, like a rock or concrete. The flails simply brush over it and leaves it in place. This also removes the danger of flying projectiles – a common danger if you use a cutter with a fixed blade.
Mulcher: Attach a heavy-duty mulcher to your excavator to cut undergrowth and mulch it to a pulp in one fell swoop! These tough tools can deal with heavy vegetation and even small trees – plus they leave you with biodegradable material that has multiple other uses.
Hammer: Rather than hiring a jackhammer, simply use an attachment on your excavator. Perfect for breaking up concrete or other solid areas. Hammers come in different grades, such as a blunt or a chisel, depending on what you need it to do.
You’ll also require the means to transport materials around the site. This could be excavated earth or debris in the initial stages of the project, or to bring in plants, trees and other materials to create the garden masterpiece. Options for this include the already mentioned skidsteer, but you could also consider:
A multi-terrain loader: Ideal for driving over easily damaged surfaces, such as lawns. You can also fit attachments, including hammers, compactors and blades.
A backhoe loader: When you need to move big objects and large volumes of material, this is a great choice. These have dual-side operation, with a bucket on one side and a carrier on the other.
A compact wheel loader: One of the quietest options, so great for use in a populated area. They’re also very easy to manoeuvre, so perfect for tighter spaces.
A compact track loader: As the name suggests, these are on tracks as opposed to wheels, so suitable for rough, boggy, sandy, or soft surfaces where wheels would struggle to gain traction.
